Thomas Duncan Ellison

Thomas Duncan Ellison, lovingly known as Duncan, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2026 at the age of 87 shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.

Born in England, Duncan immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, at the age of 14 with his parents and his older sister, Shirley. That journey marked the beginning of a life defined by curiosity, adventure, and a deep commitment to making the world a better place. Over the years, Duncan called many places home, including New Zealand, Ottawa, Wendover, Mexico, and Washago, but wherever he lived, he carried with him a genuine warmth, an open mind, and a passion for connecting with people.

Duncan devoted much of his life to public service and environmental stewardship which included clean water for all and a passion for planting trees. His work took him around the globe, where he built friendships that crossed borders and cultures. He was respected not only for his expertise and leadership but also for his generosity, integrity, and belief that meaningful progress comes through collaboration. Throughout his career, he played a significant role in improving public safety and environmental protection, helping to shape systems and standards that continue to benefit communities today. The many honours he received were a reflection of the quiet determination and dedication he brought to every endeavour.

Yet for all his professional achievements, Duncan was most proud of the life he built with those he loved. He embraced new experiences with enthusiasm, whether learning Spanish while living in Mexico, learning French while working in Ottawa, or dedicating his retirement years to environmental causes he cared deeply about. He never lost his sense of wonder about the world.

Travel was one of Duncan's greatest joys. More than simply visiting new places, he delighted in sharing those experiences with family and friends. Nothing made him happier than boarding a plane with loved ones and introducing them to the people, places, and cultures he had come to cherish. Through these shared adventures, he created memories that will be treasured for generations.

Duncan is survived by his loving wife, Karen Drake-Ellison; his daughter, Kathleen, and son, David (Kathrin), from his first marriage to Carolyn Barregar, who predeceased him in 2020. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Sarah (Evan), Christopher, Delaney, Duncan (Christine), and Devin, and by his great-grandson, Ezekiel.

He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Julie and Josee, from his second marriage to Lorraine Cheff, who predeceased him in 2020, along with their children and grandchildren. Duncan leaves behind his stepsons, Ike, Kevin, and Chris, from his marriage to Karen, and their children and grandchildren.

Duncan was predeceased by his cherished sister, Shirley, in 2026. He is fondly remembered by his brother-in-law Barry, nieces and nephews John, Vivianne, and George, along with their families.

Above all, Duncan will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, adventurous spirit, and unwavering devotion to family. He leaves behind not only a remarkable legacy of service, but also countless stories, friendships, and memories that span continents and generations.

His presence enriched the lives of many, and he will be dearly missed by family, friends, and colleagues around the world. Though he is gone, the lessons he taught, the lives he touched, and the love he shared will continue to live on in those who knew him.
