Sandra Louise (Coomber) Marshall

August 6, 1938 — January 7, 2023

Passed away peacefully at Leacock Care Centre, Orillia on Saturday, Jan 7th, 2023 in her 85th year.   Beloved wife of the late Donald Kenneth Marshall (2020).  Loving mother of Colleen (Brad), Steve (Jodi) all of Orillia, and the late Doug (Rachael) of Midland.  Loving grandmother of Zach (Jess), David (Jill), Katie Scholte (Greg), Sarah Dusome (Brandin), Karly and Liv. Great-grandmother of Isabella Scholte. Sister of the late Rick Coomber (Sally), sister-in-law of Bill Marshall (late Rita) and beloved daughter of the late Edward “Ted” & Helen (Lyons) Coomber of Leaside and Parry Sound.

Sandra grew up in Leaside, Toronto and graduated in 1961 from the Toronto Western Hospital and worked for two years as a RN before starting her family.  She raised her kids in West Hill and Agincourt and returned to Nursing in 1981 working at St John’s Convalescent Hospital in York Mills.   When Don retired, they moved to Orillia and Sandra worked for many years at the Trillium Manor - she loved being a RN and working with seniors.    After her retirement Sandra “fulfilled a dream” and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and Gerontology from Laurentian University.  She was a tireless volunteer in retirement and devoted her time to St Pauls’ United Church, Telecare and the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County.

She was truly a believer in “waste not, want not” and a recycler back in the 1970s when it was unheard of.  She always had a dog or two (most notably Heidi, Meg, Alex & Brady) and a handful of cats.  She kept in close contact with her extended family of Aunts, Uncles and cousins and was always up-to-date on family news.  She loved nature, baking, reading, sewing and quilting and found the time to look after grandchildren when they were young and later before and after school.  She, Don and their family enjoyed camping - in tents, tent trailers and trailers - traveling extensively throughout Ontario and into the east coast.  In 1981 they sold their trailer and bought a cottage on Boshkung Lake and spent their weekends and summer vacations there.  As her husband’s health declined, she became his caregiver, but sadly she developed Alzheimer and the last few years of her life were a steady decline as her memory and physical health deteriorated.  Her final years were no testament to the life she had lived.

Her family would like to thank all the staff at the Leacock Care Centre for their compassionate care and request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County or the Ontario SPCA - Orillia Branch.

Following cremation, A Celebration of Sandra's Life will be held at the Mundell Funeral Home on Saturday, January 14th from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with words of remembrance shared at 4 PM.  Messages of condolence are welcomed at
