Mary Winifred Scott (née Virgo)
March 21, 1933 – May 15, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Scott, who died peacefully on May 15, 2026, at the age of 93, in Orillia.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend. She was predeceased by her husband, John Douglas Scott, who passed away on February 18, 2023, and by her son, David John Scott, who passed away on February 9, 2016.
Mary married Doug in Toronto in 1951 and together they built a life centred on family, love, and dedication. They raised four children: David (deceased), Carol (Bob), Lynda (John), and Mike (Pauline). Her family was very important to her, and she took pride in each of them.
She was a loving grandmother to Jennifer, Tim, Melanie, Heather, Jackie, Ashley, John, Matthew, Julianna, and Evelyn, and a proud great-grandmother to 17 great-grandchildren.
She took great pleasure in gardening, and she and Doug won first prize in the Orillia Horticultural Society gardening competition five years in a row. She also enjoyed craft projects, including ceramics and sewing, and was a former member of the Granite Club and the Toronto Curling Club. Mary loved to play the piano and was an avid reader.
Mary was a dedicated teacher with the Scarborough District School Board, where she touched the lives of many students with her kindness, patience, and care. She grew up in Parry Sound, a place that remained part of her story throughout her life.
Mary will be remembered by her brother, Edwin (Helen), and her nieces and nephews, Elaine, Carolyn, Stephen (deceased), Mark, and Andrea. She was predeceased by her sister, Kathryn (Victor). She will be lovingly remembered by her longtime friend Lynn, who shared a close friendship with her for more than 25 years.
Mary will be remembered for her love, strength, and dedication. She will be missed by her family and all who knew her.
The family will be holding private celebration of life at a later date.
