It is with immense sadness that we share the news of the death of Martha Jane Hanes on August 8, 2025. Jane is survived by her sisters, Mary-Judith Macfarlane, Penelope Anne McIvor and Alice Edith Kalegaric, and brothers-in-law Robert James Macfarlane and Richard Craig McIvor. Jane’s nephew, Thomas Craig McIvor, and nieces, Heather Anne Mavis McIvor and Marion Martha Louise McIvor, will miss her dearly.
Jane was born in Montreal on December 13, 1949, the second child of Martha Margaret Byrne (Turner) and James Thomas Byrne, who was a Warrant Officer CD with clasp. As a child, Jane was an “army brat” and spent her formative years living in different communities and countries, where she very successfully developed her ability to adapt to new circumstances and make new friends. Jane graduated from Fredericton High School in New Brunswick and the following year from Base Borden High School in Ontario. She was involved in student activities, was voted prom queen and had a wonderful social life. Jane subsequently graduated from Georgian College and attended the University of Toronto.
In 1976, Jane started her four-decade career at the University Health Network in Toronto. She held various positions and retired in 2017 as Business Manager in the Department of Surgical Oncology at The Princess Margaret Hospital, where she also acted as Coordinator of the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program. Jane had many fond memories of her working life and cherished the close friends she made along the way.
Jane was a devout Catholic and prioritized faith, family and love. She was a kind and considerate person who was always guided by the Golden Rule.
Jane’s family called her Dee. She was very committed to her nieces and nephew and was truly a fun-loving person, with many favourite activities including tennis, skiing, curling, cards and hanging out with family on Lake Muskoka where wine, BBQs and parties were the order of the day.
Jane, you were a kind and compassionate person and the joy you brought to our lives was a blessing.
We are very grateful to all of the staff at the Stephen Leacock Centre in Orillia for the wonderful care that Jane received throughout her long illness.
Cremation has taken place and a Funeral Mass will be held on August 19, 2025, 2:00 pm, at Guardian Angels Catholic Church (115 West St., Orillia).
