Hugh Lummis Smith

July 29, 1925 — April 13, 2022

Smith; Hugh Lummis
Hugh Lummis Smith passed away on April 13th, 2022 at the age of 96 in his much-loved home in
Horseshoe Valley, precisely where he intended to be when his time finally came. True to his plan, he
died while on his way to tuck his beloved wife of 73 years, Barbara, into bed, as he did every night.
To the end, Hugh was a highly intelligent, ever curious, quiet and caring man, husband, father,
grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was a skilled artist, craftsman and gardener, who didn’t
waste words on frivolous talk and could always be relied upon in any situation. Family was his most
cherished asset, and in that he felt rich.
Hugh was a student at Ridley College and Western University, a private in the RAF, a lumber salesman,
and then a student again, this time at the University of Toronto. He was a librarian who was recognized
for notable contributions to the development of both the Robarts and Erindale College libraries at the U
of T. He was passionate about books; an avid reader constantly seeking knowledge and clarity. He was a
scale model shipwright and historian, who loved a good and fair discussion. He did not like to be the
centre of attention.
Hugh is survived by his wife, 5 children; Gail Stoddart (Rob), Jeffery, Anne Lougheed, Hugh (Bev), Evan
(Tracy); 13 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored. His love of a big family
party filled with food, music, laughter, and the many people he loved, will live on in those of us he has
left behind. We will profoundly miss and fondly remember him always.

Rest in peace Boo/ Dad/ Gang. We love you.
