Howard (Hap) Haywood

January 15, 1929 - Sept. 20, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Hap Haywood.  Hap passed away peacefully at Champlain Manor at the age of 93.    He leaves behind the love of his life June, married for 68 years.  He is also survived by his children Jim (Melanie), David (Deanne) and Lori (Mark).  His grandchildren Sarah (Andrew), Ryan (Julia), Jeff (Shae) and Brooklyn (Tyler).    His brother-in-law Don (Anne) of Scotland, cousins Ernie Cotton (Sharon) and Connie Kennedy (Mac).

Hap was larger than life, really; at 6’5” he was hard to miss in a crowd!  His quick wit and sense of humour kept all he knew laughing and on their toes.

He had so many interests.   He was a keen photographer, enjoyed his collection of guns and bullet making, and was one of the founding members of the Orillia Gun Club, winning a Gold Shield for Rifle Target and Gold for Handgun Target.

He loved his many travels to Scotland to visit family and taking the train all over Scotland, England and Wales.  There was always a visit to the distilleries to sample his favorite single malt whiskeys.  Right up until his death he continued to enjoy his 4 p.m. dram of scotch.

Summers were spent at the cottage in Algonquin Park. Enjoyed by many friends, family and his trusted cocker spaniel, Sandy.

Hap was a third-generation stone mason and bricklayer and worked for many years at the Huronia Regional Centre, making lifelong friendships there.

He was a committed family man, and loved nothing better than spending time with June, his children and his four grandchildren.

He will be sadly missed.  Abyssinia Hap.  “I’ll be seeing you”

At Haps request, there will be no funeral service.  Friends and family are invited to join us for a casual reception on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at their home, 126 North Street West.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital.  Messages of condolence are welcomed at www.mundellfuneralhome.com
