Frederick Michael Newton
It is with sadness that we share that Mike passed away peacefully with his family at Mariposa Hospice in Orillia on September 21, 2025, at the age of 84.
Mike leaves behind Peggy, his beloved wife of almost 60 years. He was an incredibly proud father of Sandy (Sean) Madorin, Marc Newton (Sara) and Jim Newton (Harriette Van Spall) and of his grandchildren Emma, Spencer and Carter Madorin, Rachel, Karyn, Calvin and Malcolm Newton, and Rebecca and Luke Newton. He was a supportive big brother of Carol Caldwell and Margaret Cook and had a positive impact on his many nieces and nephews over the years.
Mike was born in Barrie and shared many stories of his antics growing up on the farm. In 1965 he met Peggy in Waterloo. After ensuring she could both water-ski and bake a good chocolate cake, they married and moved to Orillia. Mike served the community for over 35 years as a police officer with the City of Orillia and later with the Orillia detachment of the O.P.P.
Mike loved the outdoors, the water, and going for drives to get a good coffee. He was always happiest in his backyard with his various tractors, projects and yardwork. A boat ride, time on the dock and a bonfire would be part of a perfect day. But overall, Mike’s favourite times were get-togethers with family and friends, especially if there was a delicious meal, a decadent dessert, and an opportunity for him to share another endlessly captivating story with his grandchildren. Being in hospice allowed for these times to continue to his very last day and for this we are grateful.
Mike will be remembered as a strong, loving, and supportive family man and a life-long friend to many. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
Funeral will be at Mundell’s Funeral Home, 79 West Street N., Orillia. There will be a short visitation from 1:30pm-2:00pm, service at 2:00pm and a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mariposa Hospice, St. James Anglican Church, or the charity of your choice in Mike’s memory.
