It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of David John Smith at home, at the age of 66. Beloved husband to Ruth (nee Chisholm) for 28 years. Loving father to Cory Vanderveen and Keziah (Dennis) Pilger. Proud grandfather to Denver and Sophie. Dear uncle to Mason, Grayson and Nathan. Sister Dianne Dodson. Predeceased by parents John and Marion Smith. Dave will be deeply missed by his many, many cousins, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Dave had a strong passion for the outdoors. He often enjoyed adventuring the woods during turkey, deer, or duck hunting seasons, or casting a line for salmon along the shores of Manitoulin Island, always with his beloved wife, Ruth, by his side.

A lifelong farmer, Dave raised beef cattle with pride and purpose. When he wasn’t tending to the land, he could often be found puttering around the property, tackling odd jobs and small projects that kept his hands busy. Dave will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love of nature, and the simple, meaningful life he built.

Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, October 7 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at the Mundell Funeral Home, 79 West Street North, Orillia. A Memorial Service will be held in the Mundell Chapel on Wednesday, October 8 at 11:00am with an inurnment to follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, 7975 Highway 12, Orillia.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor David’s memory by spending time outdoors or lending a hand to someone who needs it-just as he so often did.
