Christel Else Jaeger

May 16, 1935 — March 21, 2024

Christel is survived by her children Petra Coppen (Jim), Peter Kretschmer (Lois Shewfelt), Melanie Cormier (Barry). Cherished Oma of Jacqueline (Christopher), Justine (Graham), Francine (Kolten), Sarah and Nethanial. Great Oma to James, Damian, Wendell, Jade Amy, Violet, Bentley, Remy and Valen. Predeceased by the father of their children, Erhard Kretschmer. Christel was born in Dortmund, Germany on the 16th of May 1935 and was the only daughter born to Emil and Else Jaeger. She is predeceased by her 3 brothers, Harry, Rolf and Wolfgang. Christel is also survived by her lifelong friend and sister-in-law Ursula Jaeger in Calgary, Alberta.

After surviving the second world war, Christel left Germany with her then husband Erhard and their young daughter Petra in the late 1950's. After a brief stay in Australia, they later immigrated to Canada in the early 1960’s and settled in Sault Ste. Marie where they welcomed Peter and Melanie. Christel became well known around the Sault for her famous Tye Plates, Ginnettis, and Almond Cookies that she sold door to door for years to her many loyal customers. Christel was also well known for her time with the Sault Opera Society, being a part of many of their theatre shows in the 80’s and early 90’s both on stage and in the costume room. A huge fan of the theatre and fairytales, she could often be heard singing songs from musicals, including her favorite song ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’. An avid ‘gamer’ for many of her retirement years, Christel enjoyed regular trips to Kewadin and Bay Mills Casinos to earn her points and have a great meal.

Known to many simply as ‘Oma’, Christel devoted her life to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It wasn’t uncommon for her to be whipping up a batch of her famous German Pancakes at midnight simply because one of her ‘kids’ were hungry. We will miss her delicious homecooked meals, engaging stories and embracing hugs.

A special thank you to the staff of the Algoma Manor for their love, friendship and support shown over the last few years. Memorial donations can be made payable to Algoma Manor, Thessalon.  Arrangements entrusted to the Mundell Funeral Home.
