It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian William Wellman Crawford, who died peacefully on Friday, October 10, 2025, surrounded by his family in Orillia, Ontario. He was 88 years old.
Born on April 19, 1937 in Mitcham, Surrey, England, Brian built a rich and full life marked by love, adventure, and an enduring passion for sport. Trained as an engineer, he enjoyed a long and successful career in his field, earning the respect of his colleagues and peers.
Brian’s first great love was football (soccer). A lifelong supporter of Arsenal, he played at a high level in his youth until an injury brought his playing days to an early close. That turn of fate led to another great chapter in his life: while travelling with friends in Australia, he met the love of his life, Carole, who would become his wife and partner in countless adventures. Brian followed his heart to Canada to be with her, and together they built a beautiful life.
After settling in Montreal, Brian quickly embraced his new country, its people, and even its national sport, developing a spirited passion for hockey during the Montreal Canadiens’ heyday. The family later moved to Markham in 1975, where Brian became deeply involved in the local soccer community. He served as president of Markham Soccer Club for many years, helping to guide its growth and inspire generations of players and volunteers. His dedication was later recognized with his induction into the Markham Sports Hall of Fame, an honour that reflected his lasting impact on the sport and the community.
Brian was predeceased by his beloved wife Carole (2005). He is survived by his sons Neil and Mark, daughter-in-law Sandi, and six cherished grandchildren: Liam, Tommy, Connor, Lindsay, Lauren, and Cal.
In 2020, Brian moved to Orillia, where he enjoyed his later years surrounded by nature, family, and fond memories. His humour, warmth, loyalty and unwavering love for his family will be remembered always.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. at the Markham District Veterans Hall, 7 Washington Street, Markham, Ontario. Family and friends are invited to drop in, share memories, and celebrate Brian’s remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VON Simcoe County – Orillia Adult Day Program, where Brian spent many happy hours and formed wonderful friendships. This program was one of his favourite places to visit each week.
Donations can be made online at von.ca/en (select “Donate to VON” and indicate “In Memory of Brian Crawford” for the Orillia Adult Day Program), or by mail or phone as outlined on the website.
