Mrs. Berit Margaretta McArthur (June 14, 1919 - June 2, 2021)
Passed away peacefully at Mariposa House Hospice, in her 102nd year.
Berit was the adored and much loved Mother of Susan Goodger and Wanda McArthur (partner Geoff Robinson). She was the beloved wife of 68 years to the late Donald McArthur (2011, at the age of 100) . Berit arrived in Canada with her family from Finland at age 11, and the family resided in Toronto. Berit went to Design School in New York where she honed her skills as a clothing designer and seamstress. After marriage to Don, they lived on his farm on Concession 9 in Oro and raised their girls. In their later years, moved to Tudhope Manor in Orillia in 2008.
Berit was a loving sister to Eric Lackstrom & his wife Jean, both predeceased and dear sister-in-law to Don’s siblings: Jean (Lloyd Sampson), Lillian (Mervyn Pattenden) & Roy McArthur, all predeceased.
Berit treasured all her nieces and nephews and their families: Jan Lackstrom & Grant Macdonald, Christine Lackstrom & Reuben Green, Ray & Anne Sampson, Gil & Lois Sampson and
the Pattenden family: Donna & Ralph Dean, Joyce & Jim Travers, Larry & Cindy Pattenden, Barbara McGill, Violet & Joe D’Amico, Kim & Margaret Pattenden, Sandra Johnston, Tom Pattenden (predeceased) & Carol, Lois Pattenden (predeceased) and Terry Pattenden (predeceased).
Berit’s family and friends will miss her always cheerful demeanour, beautiful smile, her kindness and humour. She will be remembered for her long involvement in: the Women’s Institute and the Oro Horticultural Society + participation in many community activities (Oro Citizen of the Year in 1990), 4-H when her daughters were young and the Church and their activities, throughout her life. Berit had a love of gardening and enjoyed her flower beds which she maintained until leaving the farm.
Berit had a love of life and travel. Berit enjoyed regular visits to Susan and her husband in Toronto, later their home in Virginia and was very happy when they returned to live in Orillia. Berit visited Wanda in Australia twice, as well as enjoying trips to: Alaska, England, France, Scotland, USA and within Canada. Music was her great love: gospel, opera and classical. She was also a fan of ballet.
Berit remained funny, bright and inquisitive to the end. Thank you to the staff at Tudhope Manor for their care and friendships made there over the last nearly 13 years, followed by the exceptional care from all the staff at Mariposa House Hospice, Severn. We also wish to thank Dr. Kristen Farn, for her professional care and compassion shown to Berit over the years. Heartfelt appreciation to dear friends and family who have provided so much love and support to Berit and Susan. We are grateful for the fellowship and guidance provided by St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church over the years.
~Berit you will remain in our hearts forever ~
