Allan "Bud" Robert Reid

December 22, 1930 — December 5, 2023

Reid; Allan "Bud" Robert
1930 - 2023

Passed away peacefully, at the Leacock Care Centre, Orillia, on Tuesday, December 5th, 2023, at the age of 92 years.  Beloved husband of Vera Shirley (nee Molyneaux) for 71 years.  Loving father of Richard (Janet) Reid of Caledon, Janice (Carlo) Tulipano of Orillia and Jeff (Sylva) Reid of Toronto.  Cherished grandfather of Melanie (Raffy), Kristyn (Jeff), Mairyn (Jason), Kelty (Nick), Maressa, Christopher (Danielle), Isabella and great grandfather of Alex, Andrew, Cole, Gavin, Ella, Travis, Degan and Addison.  Beloved son of the late Duncan Reid and his wife Pearl (nee Crawford).  Dear brother of twin sister Alice Bent of Victoria, BC and predeceased by his siblings Ken, Irvin, Eleanor, Jim and Wallace.  Bud will be survived by his many nieces, nephews and their families.
Retired Employee of Fahramet/Kubota, Orillia; long time accomplished musician, Tuba player, member of Orillia Kiltie Band, Huronia Symphony Orchestra, Orillia Silver Band, Orillia’s Little Big Band and member of many Mariposa Arts Theatre “pit bands” for various musicals at the Orillia Opera House.
Dad learned to play the Tuba as a young man with the Orillia Salvation Army and went on to become a very sought after musician. His love of music was shared with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, some also joined him playing in bands and continue to enjoy his passion. He began his love of woodworking at a young age and worked at Ansdell Hardware, Orillia as an integral part of their family business.  Dad built a family home, with his brothers, on Harvey Street from the ground up working on his days off.  He was never afraid of a challenge and his motto was “do it right or don’t bother doing it”.
The lure of our lakes brought him to purchase a Grew powerboat and join the Orillia Power Squadron, ensuring that he could navigate the water and tie every knot. Many hours were spent enjoying his much loved boat, polishing, cleaning and travelling up the Trent Severn canal. Before long, he decided it was time to live on the lake and keep his boat with him, moving the family to the east side of Lake Couchiching and taking on more projects. Renovating the cottage into a home, bringing drinking water into the home, cutting down trees, digging up huge boulders, cutting the lawns, trimming the hedges, building an addition, workshop and large garage.
No matter where his music or projects took him, he always found time to enjoy watching the cartoons with his grandchildren, entertain them with his “Donald Duck” imitation talk and lend a helping hand when needed.  The famous “Reid Reunions” were well loved by all our extended family - games, water sports, horseshoes and who could forget those special neon hats to commemorate the occasion.
After retirement, Dad enjoyed golfing with his friends, gardening, photography and spending time with his adoring wife, Vera. Trips with family to the east and west Coasts of Canada, special trips to Hawaii, England & Scotland were highlights as well as a memorable bus trip to Boston to enjoy a Christmas concert with the Boston Pops Orchestra.
Alzheimer’s took hold of Dad and over the years eventually separated him and Vera. On those good days he was able to laugh, sing a few words, remember names of his family and enjoyed listening to all the stories his family would tell, especially the tales of all the dogs and the great grandchildren’s accomplishments.
Our family extends a special thank you to the Leacock Care Centre, Home Area 4 staff, for their wonderful care, kindness and compassion to our Dad especially during those last few days.
