Walter Ray Balkwill

It is with sorrow that we announce Wally’s passing at home on April 5, 2026 in his 80th year. Born in Foxmead on August 17, 1946 to parents William and Velma Balkwill (nee Readman) both predeceased.

Wally leaves behind his children Jeff, and Val (Dave Knox). He was the proud Grandfather of Rebecca McPhaden (Aaron), Alex (Sarah), Brooke Russell, and Hannah Russell (Brandon). Great Grandfather of Aria. He will be sadly missed by dear friend Pat Kirkpatric (nee Latimer).

He is predeceased by siblings Art (Barb) predeceased; Shirley Hardy (Jim) predeceased; Bob (Donna); Bev; Don (Shirley); Merna Stagg (Joe). Survived by Betty Jorgenson (Richard) predeceased; Marilyn Paine (Art) predeceased; Elaine Hanson. Wally will be remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Wally was a DSW in Orillia and Picton, working at Edgar, ARC Industries and Catalpa – Tamarac. He always had a love for woodworking; a skill he shared to help implement woodworking programs during his career. Community minded, Dad was one of the original members of the Orillia Township Fire Department when Station 2 opened.

Following his DSW career, he pursued his passion for woodworking, focusing on cabinet and furniture making. Those that knew him however, will know he loved his tractors. Endless days were spent in the shop, working on small engines and serving as a place for social visits and laughs as stories were shared.

The family would like thank all of the care providers for their work and compassionate support. Wally was a dedicated supporter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the RVH Cancer Center through their 50/50 draws.

In keeping with Wally’s wishes, Cremation has taken place and no service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
