Obituary

WALMA, Susan Marie

March 2, 1942 ~ September 28, 2026

With broken hearts we announce the passing of Susan Marie Walma (nee Scheich) on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Spencer House, Orillia, surrounded by family.

Loving wife of Gerald John Walma for 26 wonderful years; cherished mother of Isanna Pagliuso; dear stepmother of Michele Walma and Paul Walma. Beloved daughter of the late Clarence & Marcella Scheich; dear sister of the late Carol Boulet and the late John Scheich. Susan was a woman of many interests, talents and passions, whose curiosity and creativity touched so many aspects of her life.

Born and raised in Detroit, Susan pursued her education with enthusiasm upon moving to Canada to study at the University of Windsor and the University of Toronto. She went on to spend 17 years working in educational research at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, where her love of learning and thoughtful nature found a natural home.

Susan was never one to limit herself to just one pursuit. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to develop her own organic bread-making business, supplying Toronto health food stores. She also cultivated an organic garden of her own, taking great pleasure in growing and creating things with her hands.

Music was another important part of Susan's life. A gifted pianist and organist, she served as musical director for Cabin Fever Theatre and played piano for the pit band for Cabaret. She taught piano for several years and shared her love of music with local choirs including the Cellar Singers, Kind Edward Choir and the Orillia Vocal Ensemble. She was also a member of the local folk art group, the Brushettes, and created several large posters for musicals at St. Paul's.

In 1997, Susan moved to Orillia with her daughter, Isa. Her life there brought new friendships, adventures and a deepening connection to her community. In 2000, she joined the Walma family when she married her “millennium man,” Gerry. Together, Susan and Gerry travelled in their VW camper, enjoying journeys to both the east and west coasts and making memories along the way.

Susan was also someone who believed in being involved and giving back. She joined the choir at St. Paul's United Church and, together with her friend Joan, helped establish the cleaning bee at the church. She was a member of St. Paul's Prayer and Meditation Group, where her reflective and spiritual nature could flourish. She also developed her computer skills while working with the OPP, always demonstrating her willingness to learn something new. She was a proud member of the book club with St. Paul’s – special thank you to Margot for your true friendship and support.

Above all, Susan will be remembered as a loving mother, wife, sister, stepmother, friend and cousin. She treasured her family, including the many fun times shared with her Berschback cousins, and brought her warmth, creativity and individuality to the people and communities around her. Family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to staff at Spencer House and members of St. Paul's Centre for their ongoing care and support.

As per Susan’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Susan’s life at St. Paul’s Centre, 62 Peter Street North, Orillia, on Saturday, October 17th at 10:00AM with a time of reception to follow in the church hall. Susan will be laid to rest at St. Andrew’s-St. James’ Cemetery. The family would like to invite everyone to wear bright, joyful colours as we honour the light, warmth and creativity ‘Susie Broccolini’ brought into the lives of so many.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation through the Mundell Funeral Home to Greenpeace or St. Paul’s Centre Orillia. Messages of condolence are welcomed at www.mundellfuneralhome.com
