Smith Angus
Surrounded by his loving family, Angus Walton Smith, 82, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, in Orillia, Ontario.
He was born on July 16, 1943, to William Aitken and Margaret Walton Smith in Edinburgh, Scotland, along with identical twin brother Ian, and was welcomed by older sister Margaret McGowan.
As a young man, Angus attended vocational school in Edinburgh to become a skilled woodworker and cabinetmaker, achieving top honours in his second year. After a successful apprenticeship, he immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, where he honed his craft in antique furniture restoration. This is also where he would meet his loving wife, Donna, who he married in 1983. They settled down in Mississauga, Ontario, becoming parents in 1986 and grandparents in 2014. Angus held a particular soft spot for the family dog, Ranger, who loyally accompanied him just about everywhere- including to work!
Angus was an avid collector of antique books, furniture, and other unique pieces that he could often be found tinkering with in his home workshop. He started his own business re-finishing one-of-a-kind antique furniture, and over the years built many unique pieces for the Smith family home. Even in retirement, Angus was always sure to generously offer furniture to his sons and their growing families. He was known to share stories from his first years in Canada (“back when I first came to Toronto, there was only one skyscraper!”), interesting and famous people he met through the course of his career (“have I told you of the time I met the Queen's Mother?”), places he had travelled (“the fountains outside The Bellagio are absolutely spectacular!”), and everything in between. Some of his favourite stories could eventually be recited by heart by everyone at family gatherings, including his granddaughters! He was especially known for an emphatic “ahhhhh, that hits the spot!” after an especially good cup of tea or coffee. While he was always one for stories, he was also sure to live in the moment by declaring that a meal, cup of tea, or bottle of red wine was “the best he ever had”.
Angus is survived by wife Donna, sons Andrew (Erika) and James (Jennifer), grandchildren Clara and Isla, his siblings Margaret (Robert predeceased) and Ian (Rosemary), and many nieces, nephews and loved ones in Canada, Scotland, and Australia. He was preceded in death by both his parents.
A small funeral service will be held at the Mundell Funeral Home, 79 West St. N., Orillia, Ontario on April 17, 2026 at 1 PM.
